Hahaha, poor Bilbo. Always getting left behind

Picturrific Mini Challenge

I'm taking a break before starting chapter 5 of The Hobbit, and thought I would join one of the mini-challenges set up by the people over at 24hourreadathon.com. This one is hosted by the lovely Stella Matutina, and the task is as follows:

"I want you to step away from your book just long enough to search for a picture that somehow relates to it. Find an image that makes you think of the main character, an important plot twist, the book's theme, the setting, or anything other story-related element that triggers your imagination."

Now, it's been a few years since I last read The Hobbit, and one thing that struck me when I picked up the book to read tonight was how vivid the descriptions were. I love much of Tolkien's work, so it really shouldn't come as as surprise to me, but it did. I think I'd just forgotten... Anyway, I've just finished the sequence where Thorin + the rest of the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf stop at Rivendell, before going into the Misty Mountains, so I went searching for images that looked like the landscape I imagined these characters in. This is what I found:

I can clearly imagine Rivendell being located somewhere beyond that turn in the valley (as a bonus this image is even from New Zealand, where they shot the movie(s).)

And then, from the valley of Rivendell, into the Misty Mountains and beyond...

Mid-Event Survey

...or more like start-of-event survey if you're me.

1) How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired?
Seeing as I've just kicked off my readathon for real, after a couple of hours of sleep, I feel pretty good at the moment!
2) What have you finished reading?
Nothing, sadly. Read two chapters of Moon Over Soho earlier, and I'm one chapter into The Hobbit now.
3) What is your favorite read so far?
I can't choose. Both Moon... and the Hobbit are great.
4) What about your favorite snacks?
Chocolate!
5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? If so, give them some love!
No, I haven't really had time to look... But I probably will, whenever I get bored :)

Finally!

So, about halfway through the readathon I'm finally starting my first physical book. I had planned to start earlier, but there was just no way I could manage without catching up on some sleep after I got home from work.
So, it's a classic! The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is the first book out for me. :D

Kick off!

I'm kicking off my readathon a few hours late by listening to Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovich on audiobook on my way home from work. Not expecting to finish this book by the end of the readathon (currently on chapter 5), but I really enjoy it regardless

Readathon preparations

So, this is what my "readathon shelf" currently looks like. I'm not planning on getting through all of these books in the space of the readathon, but these are books I've been wanting/meaning to read/re-read, and the readathon is a great opportunity to do that!

I'm working when the readathon officially starts here (at 2pm local time) tomorrow, so I'll miss the first few hours, but I plan to spend my evening/night reading, participating in challenges and generally just hanging around with all the awesome people reading with me.
If you want to chat, feel free to leave me comments here, or over on Twitter at @LiaveEkeli.

The List

Here is a list of things I might end up reading on the day of the read-a-thon. This list will probably be huge. I have no intention of finishing everything on it in the space of 24 hours. In fact, I'll be happy if I finish one or two things on it.
This list is here, first and foremost, to help me remember what books I'd like to read, as I see them in my shelves or around the house, and I'll probably come back and add things to it from now and in the days leading up to the readathon.

  • Game of Thrones - George R.R Martin  (unlikely that I'll finish, but I'd like to try. I've been trying to read it forever)
  • The Hobbit - J.R.R Tolkien (want to read this again before the movie comes out in December)
  • Leviathan - Scott Westerfeld
  • Divergent -  Veronica Roth

The intro post

Hello,

My name is Karine, and if you've found this blog you've stumbled upon the blog I've created for my participation in the Dewey's Read-a-thon in October 2012.
I've participated in the read-a-thon before, with my livejournal blog (liave-ekeli.livejournal.com, in anyone is interested for any reason. Friend me if you like, I don't bite!), but this year I thought I would try creating a blog specifically for the purpose of the read-a-thon.

I'm not a very good blogger, but I'll try to note my progress in the read-a-thon here. If any fellow participants in the read-a-thon want to say hello, or chat with me I'd love that, so don't be shy :)

P.S
I'm also on Twitter (@LiaveEkeli) if anyone wants to chat there.
